A driver was injured in a trucking accident in Kansas City on Thursday January 19, 2012

A big rig truck lost control in the southbound lanes of I-435 and tipped over. The truck driver was seriously injured and needed to be physically cut free from the cab of the truck. He was promptly taken to a nearby hospital. Thankfully his injuries are considered to be non-life threatening. While this accident did not involve any other vehicles, it did shut down the highway for over an hour, creating quite a headache for commuters trying to get deeper into the Kansas City Metro.

Kansas City Families May Be Due Compensation after Fatal Trucking Accidents

Trucking injury accidents caused by drowsy driving are common in Kansas and Missouri.

Trucking accidents happen for a lot of reason. Distracted and inattentive driving is up there, as it is with the accidents in any vehicle category. The one cause of trucking accidents that is truly heart breaking are the accidents caused by a driver pushing himself too far and falling asleep at the wheel. We know drivers feel pressure to meet deadlines and often skip on sleep and meals in order to make ends meet. This is a dangerous practice that leads to many trucking accidents here in Kansas and Missouri.

Trucking injury accidents caused by drowsy driving are common in Kansas and Missouri.

An Arkansas Jury recently ruled in favor of a Missouri family who was suing a trucking company following the death of Roger Reagan, a truck driver who was killed in a crossover crash in Northern Arkansas in 2008. Reagan’s family sued the other trucking company, claiming the driver found at fault of the accident was too tired to drive and overly exhausted, which caused the crossover crash.

Distracted Driving a Dangerous Practice for Kansas and Missouri Truck Drivers

Distracted Driving continues to be a problem for truck drivers in Kansas and Missouri.

At Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys, we know there has been some modest improvement in trucking safety over the last few years but we also know that until we are no longer seeing trucking accidents on a daily basis, there is a long way to go. The danger though isn’t only to other motorists to but to pedestrians and especially road construction workers along our nation’s highways.

Distracted Driving continues to be a problem for truck drivers in Kansas and Missouri.

Last weekend in Ohio, a 40 year-0ld road construction worker was killed when he was struck by a semi-truck while his crew was posting signs. The man was killed when the big rig went off road– while the driver admits he was trying to pick up some loose papers– not watching where he was going in a marked construction zone.

This is a tragic accident and we want to extend our deepest sympathies to friends and family of the worker killed in this unfortunate situation. Our experienced Kansas Trucking Injury Attorneys know driving a big rig truck is no picnic but that is what makes attentive driving so much more crucial. You can never predict what is going to happen on the road in front of you. Being behind the wheel of a semi-truck makes it that much more difficult to react as it is. No matter how experienced of a driver you are, eyes on the road is always going to win out over gut instinct. You may have done something 99 times but it only takes that once for something tragic to happen.

Two Injured in Trucking Accident in Waco, TX. Involving Multiple Vehicles

At Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys, we know how horrifying it is to think about what can happen when several semi-tractor trailer trucks are involved in the same accident.  Anytime you have a multiple vehicle accident, serious injuries and sadly, fatalities usually are involved.

Two people suffered serious injury in a horrific ten vehicle accident that involved an 18 wheeler big rig truck in Waco, Texas. The trucking injury accident happened on October 25, 2011 on around 10 a.m. on Interstate 35. Authorities investigating say the truck stopped suddenly on the highway when the driver realized the truck would not clear an upcoming over pass, triggering a chain reaction. The truck was apparently off its normal route.

While this accident may have been caused by an error on the part of one of the truck drivers, keeping the roads safe is the responsibility of everyone.  Next time you’re on the road with one of the highway goliaths, keep these important driving tips in mind. Never ride in a trucker’s blind spot, which is at the right/ rear of the vehicle and right front corner of the truck.  If you’re going to pass a truck, get it over with.  Never ride side by side if you can control it because you never know when you’ll slip into one of these blind spots.

Be a patient driver.  Driving a big rig is much more difficult than driving a smaller vehicle.  Next time you’re rushing to get through an intersection, keep in mind that the truck driver isn’t trying to slow everyone down, they’re trying to make sure they turn safely without hitting anyone.  It’s for your safety.

Our experienced Kansas City Trucking Accident and Injury Attorneys know that truck drivers are already getting involved in ongoing training programs but they can’t do it alone.  All motorists need to take responsibility on the roads.  Whether you are driving, a car, van, pick-up truck, motorcycle or one of these big rig semi-trucks, we all need to do our part to keep the roads safe for everyone.

If you or someone you love has suffered a serious injury in an accident involving a big rig or semi truck, you and your family may be entitled to compensation for your losses.  Don’t delay, call our experienced Kansas City Personal Injury Lawyers.  With over 15 years of experience in Trucking Injury Accident cases, we may be able to help you through this difficult time.

Train-Truck Crash Raises Questions about Safety of Unmarked Crossings in Kansas and Missouri

At Kansas City Accident Injury Attorneys, we know train crossings can be very dangerous especially when there is no warning signals.  Which if you’ve driven across the state of Kansas or Missouri on some of the back roads, you’ve seen there are plenty of crossings right here without them.  A scary example of how dangerous these unmarked crossings can be happened last week when a truck driver suffered severe head injuries in a collision with a train near Salt Lake City, Utah.  The collision between the water truck and the train happened at a location where the crossing does not have any lights or barrier arms just ‘crossbuck’ warning sign.

In the crash, the truck driver was ejected from the truck and suffered critical head injuries in the trucking accident.  He was airlifted him to a nearby medical center where he was listed in critical but stable condition.

Our experienced Kansas and Missouri Trucking Injury Lawyers are horrified by this accident and we certainly hope the man injured in this accident is able to recover.   We want to remind all motorists, whether you are driving a big rig, a motorcycle or a car to respect the laws at a train crossing intersection even if there isn’t a clearly marked warning signal.

Here are some safety tips to follow as a motorist:

  • SLOW DOWN and prepare to stop when approaching a train crossing.  Not all crossings have light signals.  Pay attention.
  • Trains are wider than the tracks.  Maintain a distance of at least 15 FT. clearance on either side of a train crossing.
  • Always LOOK BOTH WAYS.  Don’t always focus on a train coming from one direction.  be prepared for a train to come from the other direction as well.
  • LISTEN.  Roll down a window if weather might make it difficult to hear an approaching train.
  • If your vehicle should get stuck on a rail road track.  GET OUT of the vehicle immediately and call 911.
